FRAMEWORK / CONTEXT

As the second edition of Rijeka Site-specific mobility we are proposing specific location that reflects multiple dimensions of time, suggests numerous potential narratives and variety of approaches to the topic of site and its specific context. This year's location is a historical ship, Yugoslav Navy yacht Galeb. After its rich and tormentous history the ship is now located in Rijeka harbour with a perspective to become a museum/monument. 

CONTENT

Starting from a location rich in historical, political and spatial terms, students are invited to develop site-specific works (installations, light interventions, performances) in dialogue and relation to the ship Galeb.

OBJECTIVES

By activating Studio and TIP course (Site-specific and Lightning in Art) students are invited to develop projects that will integrate skills and competences of those courses in a single work.

Proposed courses are in line with the multiple possibilities of the chosen site so that students can adopt the ‘right’ strategy in order to react. The aim of creating time/space/body/light interventions is to activate critical discourse with the location, release hidden narratives and project possible interpretations.

This workshop will look into the process of creating site-specific, real/life works from the phase of research to conception, production, performance and public presentation.

LOCATION (short info)

Yugoslav Navy yacht Galeb was built in 1938 in Genoa as bananas transportation boat under the name of RAMB III. In 1943 German Nazi troupes turned it into an auxiliary cruiser under the name Kiebitz. While in Rijeka, it was sunk on the 25th of November 1944 by an allied aircraft. In 1948 it was raised from the bottom of the harbour and in 1952 it was reconstructed in Pula shipyard as a school ship of the Yugoslav Navy under the new name Galeb (Seagull). From 1952 till Tito’s death it was used as a residency and place for political missions, foreign visits, diplomacy meetings and jet-set gatherings. In 2009 the City of Rijeka bought the ship with the idea to transform it into a museum.

The ship had an iconic status among the people of Yugoslavia, as well as among the many diverse nations and members of the Non-Aligned Movement.

Galeb is 117 meters long and 15 meters wide.

Schedule – Duration

  • - introduction on Moodle/Mudri and launch of the course
  • - 2 weeks online in June (research, discussion, preparation)
  • - 7 days in situ workshop in Rijeka (production, exhibition, evaluation)
  • - postproduction of workshop as documentation

-    June 30th – July 3rd production on location

-    July 4th – exhibition setup and final public presentation

-    July 5th – evaluation of the course
