Traditionally, The Day of the Academy of Applied Arts Dec. 6th is celebrated with a juried student exhibition and a presentation of the APU AWARD to selected best students. This year, the exhibition opening was held Dec. 8th, when the APU AWARDS for the academic year 2013-2014 were announced by the Dean prof. Josip Butković, the Mayor of Rijeka and the deputy perfect of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.

We are very proud to announce that two out of three awarded students were ADRIART mobilities participants and have exhibited works produced during MAP and/or mobility workshops.

MONIKA RAJKOVAČA, graduate student of the Art Education master programme was awarded the APU AWARD for the best student in 2013-2014 academic year. We congratulate Monika for her outstanding performances in promoting student activities at the Academy and further, for her contribution to the academic development (she is an active member of the Student Council and a student member in numerous APU committees) and the artistic development overall and for having an excellent average grade point. In addition, we are delighted that the artwork she exhibited is the collaborative piece “Cloud” which she produced within the RAPR 2014 ForeCAST mobility course in Graz together with students Valerija Zabret and Lisa Horvath.

“It is my exceptional honor to have received this Award and I would hereby like to thank the Academy of Applied Arts, the Dean and the Mayor on this support.  I would like to especially thank my RAPR 2014 mentors from Graz Dr.phil. MFA Daniela Brasil, Dipl.-Ing. Richard Dank, prof. Nayari Castillo and prof. Hanns Holger Rutz, for a rich learning experience in which I was able to combine different media, which contributed to my artistic and visual thinking. I would like to thank my fellow students with whom I worked together on the “Could” piece – Valerija Zabret and Lisa Horvath. It was a great collaborative experience!”

ANA ALEKSANDRA BUKOVIĆ, graduate student of the Media Arts and Practices (MAP) master programme was awarded APU AWARD for the Best Fine Art Work in the exhibition – “Autorefleksija” / “Self-Reflection” (2013, installation), which was produced within MAP and previously exhibited at MAP in MOTION Rijeka.

Prof. Katarina Rukavina wrote in her catalogue text:

“Autorefleksija” is an object encasing vertical dark and tight interior space of a box that allows for only one communication channel with the exterior world – a simple thin slit at eye-height. It focuses on the questioning and contemplation of the internal and the external life-space, which the author calls the inter-space. “I embarked. Outwards. Where to? How to reach? I reveal and I hide and I intertwine. The slit of honesty becomes the connecting inter-space. A small life-space.” (Ana Aleksandra Buković). The gaze through the slit also reveals a different perception of reality, playing with our ideas of visibility, the gaze and the insight.

We also congratulate the third awarded student Ivana Šepac, for the APU AWARD for the Best Applied Art Work “Svijet oblika” / “The World of Shapes”, as well as all other APU students who exhibited at the APU AWARD annual exhibition, including MAP students: Liberta Mišan, Nina Zimmermann, Nikolina Hrga and Renata Fugošić!
